Archery Hunting at Silvertine
The Silvertine property is an elk bow hunters paradise. The thick forest allows us to get close and average shots on our elk are 20-50 yards. The distance is not so much the problem and some years depending on the annual rainfall is the thick vegetation that limits my guests to shooting opportunities. Hunters that practice a lot normally do well and those hunters that practice not only shooting at a target at a set distance but practise shooting shots at their targets in the bush do even better. Take the time t practice shooting as if you were hunting, and not just in your back yard. Take your targets out to the forest and set them up behind brush, shooting between trees and though narrow shooting lanes and windows in the brush. Learn to understand your arrows trajectory at set distances, as you might just encounter a shooting opportunity at 40 yards where your 40 yard sigh pin might line up with a limb at 20 yards, but in reality the arrow will clear the limb, and fall into the vitals.
The most important piece of bowhunting equipment is not your bow, it's the broad head you use. Elk are HUGE animals, especially ours and can weigh up to 1200 lbs. I cannot stress that enough have your practice broad heads tuned in and flying good and come to camp with the EXACT same Brodhead's still in the package never used, new unused hunting broad heads that are razor sharp! I don't care if you shot 50 lbs or 500 lbs I want to see a sharp broad head!! There are many broad heads on the market now that are excellent, but I have found most do the job perfectly, so I do not recommend any particular one. Like I said earlier our bow hunters biggest limiting factor is the brush, but another big factor for my guests is the clothing they wear. Silvertine is a brush place and 100% forest. make sure you come with a fleece type clothing that is QUIET to scratch, as you will be walking though brush and it will be scratching your pant legs and coat. The sound of brush racking across nylon and denim have sent many bulls for the hill as the hunter tries to sneak into range for that shot of a lifetime. Some of our bow hunting is done in large enclosed blinds for elk, and the same rules apply for clothing there, as your movement in the blind might not be seen but if its heard they are gone! If you have any other questions for me on your bow hunt please contact me I would be glad to offer recommendations and your input to this page will help me update it for the next hunter that reads it. |
